Lamine Yamal is becoming increasingly important at FC Barcelona. At the age of 17, he has not only established himself as one of the most promising talents in the team, but his influence has also begun to extend to strategic decisions, such as player signings.
The sporting management, led by Deco and supported by Joan Laporta, has started to take the youngster’s preferences into account, realizing that he represents the future of the club and must be surrounded by the best options to fully develop his talent.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper “El Nacional”, one of the names that has been circulating in recent weeks is Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract with Liverpool is coming to an end.
The English full-back, one of the most prominent in the Premier League, is expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season. This move could be an opportunity for Barcelona, as Alexander-Arnold would arrive on a free transfer, allowing the club to strengthen its squad without spending a significant amount. However, what initially seemed like an ideal opportunity is now facing some complications, partly due to Lamine Yamal’s preferences.
Currently, the right-back position at Barcelona is excellently covered by Jules Kounde. Though his natural position is as a centre-back, Kounde has embraced the right-back role with impressive form.
He has adapted remarkably well and is now regarded as one of the best right-backs in the world. His defensive solidity, along with his ability to contribute offensively, has proven to be the perfect complement to Yamal on the right flank.
The chemistry between the two is clear, which has helped Lamine perform admirably. He feels comfortable and supported with Kounde by his side, allowing him the freedom to showcase his attacking abilities.
Given this situation, the signing of Alexander-Arnold is seen as unnecessary and could even be viewed as a move that might negatively impact Yamal’s development. The Englishman’s very attacking style of play could disrupt the right-wing balance that has been achieved between Kounde and Yamal.
Furthermore, Yamal seems to prefer continuing his partnership with Kounde on the pitch—something both Deco and Flick appreciate, as they recognize the importance of a supportive environment for young talent.
As a result, the chances of Barcelona signing Alexander-Arnold are becoming increasingly unlikely. While, under different circumstances, the English player might have been a priority signing, the stability of the Kounde-Yamal duo, along with Lamine’s role as the big bet for the future, makes Barcelona more inclined to support the stability of its young star rather than disrupt the current dynamic of the team.
