Barcelona are currently exploring their options in the transfer market to strengthen their squad for next season, with the club’s sporting director, Deco, at the heart of the strategic negotiations taking place in Munich.
According to sources close to the Catalan club, Deco has begun talks with Bayern Munich regarding a potential swap deal involving Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong and Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich.
Kimmich’s contract situation is a key factor in these negotiations, as the German player’s contract expires next summer, giving him the possibility to leave Bayern Munich on a free transfer.
Given these circumstances, Deco has proposed an offer that would allow Bayern to avoid losing one of their star players without receiving any financial compensation by including De Jong in the deal.
For Barcelona, this operation has several benefits. Firstly, the club would be able to offload one of the highest-paid players on the team.
Although De Jong is an outstanding player with exceptional technical abilities, his style does not perfectly align with the tactical approach preferred by coach Hansi Flick, who favors a more dynamic and physically demanding style of play in midfield. On the other hand, Kimmich’s arrival at Barcelona would meet Flick’s request, as he sees him as a central figure in his future plans.
From Bayern Munich’s perspective, adding De Jong would also make sense. The Dutchman has extensive experience and technical quality, making him capable of leading Bayern’s midfield if Kimmich were to leave. Although losing the German player would be painful for the club’s supporters, signing a player like De Jong would significantly ease this blow.
Additionally, De Jong’s versatility, being able to play both as a defensive and attacking midfielder, would provide Bayern Munich with increased tactical flexibility, aligning with the plans of coach Vincent Kompany, who is searching for midfield alternatives to maintain the team’s competitiveness across all competitions.
In Barcelona’s current economic context, completing such a deal would be an important step toward achieving financial balance and strengthening the team’s competitiveness. Besides bolstering the midfield, Kimmich’s arrival at Camp Nou would send a strong message about the club’s continued investment in top-tier signings with the goal of regaining its place among Europe’s elite.
With Deco leading the negotiations, all signs point to this being one of the most significant moves in the upcoming transfer period. Convincing all parties involved that the deal will be beneficial both from a sporting and economic perspective will be crucial. For now, the ball is in Bayern Munich’s court.
