Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is pressuring the Blaugrana management to renew the contract of one of the stars of the Catalan club’s first-team squad.
The German coach led Barcelona to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey after a dominant 5-0 victory over Valencia at the latter’s Mestalla stadium.
According to information from the Catalan newspaper “Sport”, which confirmed that Flick is working hard to convince Barcelona’s management to renew Frenkie de Jong’s contract, the Dutch midfielder has been given a pivotal role in the coach’s squad despite his physical difficulties.
The newspaper noted that Flick views the Dutch star as a fundamental pillar for the team’s future, expecting him to become the first choice in the defensive midfield, ahead of Casado, which increases the importance of his staying at Camp Nou.
The newspaper further explained that Barcelona faces a major financial challenge, as De Jong receives a high salary due to deferred payments, making next season the most expensive for the Blaugrana. As a result, the club’s management is trying to extend his contract for a long period while ensuring a more balanced salary distribution.
The Spanish newspaper reported that the Dutch international is hesitant due to the financial concessions he made previously, which makes negotiations complicated despite Flick’s strong support.
