Despite Barcelona’s qualification for the Champions League semi-finals, the atmosphere within the dressing room and coaching staff was marked by mixed feelings.
The 3–1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park, despite securing aggregate victory, revealed several weaknesses within the team.
According to coach Hansi Flick, the left-back position is one of the most urgent areas requiring reinforcement ahead of next season.
With Alejandro Balde sidelined due to injury, youngster Gerard Martin has stepped in, delivering an impressive performance against Dortmund. He showed maturity and composure despite the difficult conditions.
However, Flick believes that relying on Martin alone is insufficient, especially considering the demands of a long and challenging season.
After calmly reviewing the second leg, the German coach communicated his request to Joan Laporta and Deco: to sign an experienced left-back who can immediately compete for a starting role.
Flick acknowledges that the team has coped without Balde, but he also understands that top-tier clubs cannot afford to have gaps in key positions. If Barcelona hopes to seriously contend for all competitions next season, the margin for error must be reduced as much as possible.
Gerard Martin’s strong showing in Germany was not enough to secure a permanent place in the starting lineup. Despite his promising character and defensive abilities, his inexperience remains evident in high-stakes matches. Flick views Martin as a valuable prospect for Barcelona’s future but does not consider him the ideal replacement in Balde’s absence.
From this perspective, Flick’s plan becomes clear: to sign a full-back with significant European experience who can make an immediate impact. While Martin is expected to remain part of the squad, his role will likely be secondary until he gains more experience.
The club’s technical department has already begun evaluating several candidates for the position. Chief among them is Rayo Vallecano’s André Ratiu, who is capable of playing both left and right back. Ratiu is considered a financially viable option, and his tactical versatility could prove useful to the team.
On the other hand, the potential deal for Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras appears more complex. Despite his standout performances, his high market value and Benfica’s reluctance to negotiate a reduced fee could hinder the transfer, especially in light of Barcelona’s ongoing financial limitations.
