Although the Spanish league title is already secured at Camp Nou, Hansi Flick’s ambitions extend beyond domestic success. In his first season with Barcelona, the German coach did not rest on his laurels, clearly stating, “We have the potential to achieve more.” His primary goal for next season is unequivocal: winning the Champions League.
However, Flick believes there is one position that needs immediate reinforcement if the Catalan team is to reach the European summit: goalkeeping. During his recent meetings with the sporting directors, he emphasized the need to sign a top-class goalkeeper capable of making a difference in big matches. In this context, according to information from the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Flick has requested the signing of Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, whom he sees as the most suitable option to support his European project.
This move was not random; rather, it came after a careful study of the team’s performance this season and a clear comparison with the performances of the Champions League finalists. Both Paris Saint-Germain, led by Donnarumma, and Inter Milan, led by Yann Sommer, have provided vivid examples that a distinguished goalkeeper can turn the tide of championships at crucial moments—something Barcelona currently lacks.
Marc-André ter Stegen, the veteran goalkeeper and one of the team’s leaders, has endured a difficult season marked by a long absence due to injury, and his late return has not convinced Flick and his coaching staff of his current level. Concerns are evident regarding his physical fitness and declining reflexes, prompting Flick to emphasize that the team needs a goalkeeper who is physically and mentally ready for the Champions League start in September.
Conversely, despite Wojciech Szczęsny’s impressive performances since his arrival in the winter, his future with Barcelona remains uncertain. Flick does not see him as a long-term option, especially if Ter Stegen’s form continues to decline.
Flick’s message to Deco and the board was clear: signing a new goalkeeper must be a top priority this summer. The goalkeeper should preferably have European experience and be highly prepared both technically and mentally. One prominent name on the table is Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine World Cup-winning goalkeeper, whose confidence and strong presence under pressure make him an ideal choice for Barcelona’s European ambitions.
Ultimately, if Barcelona has proven its worth domestically, the biggest challenge now is to impose continental dominance—and Hansi Flick knows full well that the path to European glory begins from the goal.
