Barcelona has launched serious efforts in the summer transfer market, prioritizing reinforcement of the attacking line, particularly the wingers, while also exploring options to strengthen the goalkeeping position.
Although German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen remains the undisputed first choice, his recent extended absence due to injury has prompted the club’s management to consider signing a reliable backup, in order to provide security in the event of future setbacks.
According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan club is currently awaiting a response from Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. Coach Hansi Flick has identified him as the ideal replacement for Ter Stegen should he become unavailable again. Szczęsny made a strong impression during the recent El Clásico, which ended in a 4–3 win over Real Madrid. He later confirmed receiving a two-year contract extension offer from Barcelona. However, he has yet to make a decision, stating that he plans to discuss the matter with his wife before deciding.
Meanwhile, the club’s current third-choice goalkeeper, Iñaki Peña, is aware that his path to becoming the second-choice stopper could be blocked if Szczęsny stays. As a result, Peña is reportedly considering options away from the club in pursuit of more playing time.
Mundo Deportivo also reports that Barcelona has recently entered the race to sign 32-year-old Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, the Aston Villa star. Martínez has attracted interest from several European clubs as well as Saudi Arabian sides, who are prepared to make lucrative offers.
Speculation about his future intensified after an emotional display in Aston Villa’s 2–0 win over Tottenham at Villa Park, where the Argentine goalkeeper broke down in tears, an act many interpreted as a possible farewell.
Martínez is also reportedly on Manchester United’s radar as a potential replacement for André Onana.
Known for his fierce competitive spirit, Martínez has caught the attention of Barcelona’s leadership, who view him as a strong candidate to bolster the goalkeeping department and bring added balance and solidity to the squad next season.
