Spanish press reports have revealed that Real Madrid has decided to strengthen its midfield during the upcoming summer transfer window, at the direct request of the expected coach, Xabi Alonso.
This move by the royal club comes following the confirmed departure of Croatian Luka Modrić on May 22, 2025, and the anticipated exit of German Toni Kroos in the summer of 2024.
According to the same sources, Alonso has requested that Real Madrid’s management sign a midfielder with similar characteristics to Manchester City star Rodri, as he believes the team needs a player capable of performing defensive and organizational roles in midfield.
The report added that Los Blancos are prepared to spend a significant amount to sign a player with high technical and physical capabilities to support the team’s new project, especially after securing the signing of French forward Kylian Mbappé.

The Merengue management aims to fulfill Alonso’s demands early, in preparation for a strong start to the new season and to provide all the necessary elements that suit the Spanish coach’s style of play. The newspaper indicated that Florentino Pérez is waiting to see how things develop after the City star returns from a long-term injury. If he regains his form, negotiations to sign him at Real Madrid will begin immediately.
The report also mentioned that the prospect of signing Rodri has angered Brazilian star Vinicius Junior, who believes that bringing in the Spanish midfielder would be tantamount to signaling his own departure from Real Madrid, should it happen.
It is worth noting that Rodri won the Ballon d’Or award for the 2024 season, amid fierce competition from Real Madrid’s Brazilian star Vinicius Junior.
