With the beginning of a new era at Real Madrid under the leadership of Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, the outlines of the club’s next technical project are starting to take shape. The young coach aims to build a balanced and cohesive team that aligns with his tactical philosophy and both domestic and European ambitions. In this context, Alonso has clearly expressed his intention to offload several players who do not fit into his plans for next season.
Known for his meticulous and disciplined approach to squad building, Alonso is seeking to streamline the dressing room by parting ways with players who have failed to meet expectations or are incompatible with his intended style of play. This forms part of a broader effort to restructure the team and create space for new signings capable of making an immediate impact.
Among the first names set to leave is French full-back Ferland Mendy. Spanish media report that Alonso has effectively signaled the end of Mendy’s role at the club—at least for the foreseeable future.
According to the Spanish newspaper Sport, Alonso does not believe Mendy fits the tactical system he plans to implement next season. While the French international is known for his defensive solidity, Alonso prefers a left-back with greater height and more creativity going forward, qualities Mendy lacks.
Mendy’s strongest advocate at Real Madrid, former coach Carlo Ancelotti—who once labeled him the best left-back in the world—is no longer at the club. At Ancelotti’s request, the club had previously extended Mendy’s contract until June 2028 and increased his annual salary. However, with Ancelotti’s departure, Mendy’s position has become vulnerable.
Real Madrid is already eyeing replacements, with Benfica’s Álvaro Carreras reportedly a top target to fulfill Alonso’s tactical requirements in his debut season at the Santiago Bernabéu.
