Real Madrid continues to lay the groundwork for its new project ahead of the upcoming season, under the anticipated leadership of Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, who is expected to succeed Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti as head coach of the first team.
As part of his efforts to reshape the squad according to a new tactical vision, Alonso has expressed interest in bringing back several players who have previously worn the white shirt at the Santiago Bernabéu. Chief among them is striker Joselu, who spent last season at the club on loan.
Although Joselu’s appearances were limited, he made a notable impact with his effectiveness off the bench, showcasing a sharp goal-scoring instinct inside the box—an attribute currently lacking in Real Madrid’s frontline.
However, according to sources close to the club, recent discussions have taken place with the player, who is currently under contract with Qatari side Al-Gharafa until 2026, with an option to extend for an additional year. Those same sources indicate that Joselu politely declined the opportunity to return, emphasizing his desire to remain committed to the ongoing sporting project in Qatar.
The player expressed deep appreciation for Real Madrid and for Xabi Alonso, but affirmed that his professional commitment and enthusiasm for continuing in the Qatar Stars League ultimately led him to make a firm and clear decision to refuse the offer.
Joselu’s refusal presents a new challenge for Alonso, who had been counting on adding a traditional striker—one strong in aerial duels—to provide the team with a tactical edge in difficult matches. Given the limited options currently available in the market, the Spanish coach may now be forced to turn to Real Madrid’s youth academy, La Fábrica, in search of a young forward with attributes similar to Joselu’s.
