After a season in which Real Madrid finished empty-handed, failing to win any domestic or continental titles, it became clear that the club was in urgent need of restructuring. The inability to compete for silverware prompted club president Florentino Pérez to make a decisive move: bringing an end to the Carlo Ancelotti era, while expressing gratitude for his contributions despite the shortcomings of the past campaign.
In a step symbolizing change and future ambition, Real Madrid announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the team’s new head coach. This return carries both symbolic significance and high expectations, as the club entrusts its former captain with leading a bold and revitalized project. With this major change at the helm of the technical staff, Pérez is preparing for an assertive summer in the transfer market, aiming to reinforce the squad with players capable of restoring the club’s prestige and returning it to title-winning form.
One of the club’s main targets is Álvaro Carreras, the talented left-back from Benfica. Under Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid is eager to strengthen its backline across all areas, especially after last season’s inconsistent defensive performances.
However, according to journalist Ramón Sánchez, negotiations between Real Madrid and Benfica have stalled. The Portuguese side is standing firm on the player’s €50 million release clause, while Madrid is pushing to lower the fee to around €35 million.
Officials at the Bernabéu are currently awaiting the green light from Florentino Pérez to proceed with the deal, while optimism remains high in the player’s camp that an agreement can eventually be reached.
