Press reports indicated that the Barcelona defender and Spain U-21 international suffered a fracture to his right metatarsal bone yesterday during the match against Slovakia in the first round of the group stage of UEFA Euro 2025.
Spain won 3–2 against Slovakia.
Spanish newspaper Sport reported that Gerard Martin will return to Barcelona on Thursday for surgery after sustaining the injury during the opening match of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship against Slovakia.
Martin left the Spanish national team camp after experiencing pain in his hand during the match and was substituted at halftime, despite battling through the injury and attempting to continue.
He had suffered a blow to his wrist but insisted on playing on until he was eventually substituted after La Rojita secured a 2–0 lead through goals from Mark Pupil and Mathieu Joseph.
This injury brings Gerard Martin’s season to an early end, depriving him of the opportunity to complete the tournament and shine at the international level. It could also complicate his potential move from Barcelona during the upcoming summer transfer window.
