As European clubs accelerate their preparations for the new season, it appears that Barcelona’s management has begun outlining a surprising move on the attacking front, amid a clear desire from the technical staff, led by Hansi Flick, to make a significant change in a critical position.
Although some prominent names have been strongly linked within the club in recent weeks, there has been a noticeable shift in direction from the coaching staff, especially after a thorough analysis by the German coach, who did not hide his concern about repeating the same mistakes the team had previously suffered.
While expectations pointed to a major signing, Flick surprised everyone behind closed doors by completely rejecting one of the targets, despite the player’s high market value and experience with his national team and a prestigious English club.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Manchester United star Marcus Rashford failed to convince Flick, who believes his performances have been inconsistent and fears his technical and mental fluctuations in a competitive environment like Barcelona’s—especially given the financial pressures the club is facing. This makes any poor investment extremely costly.
In contrast, Flick proposed an alternative that had not previously been considered: Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman of Atalanta. The German coach regards Lookman as a more intelligent and tactical option due to his mental composure, versatility in attacking roles, and strong defensive commitment.
The player had a standout season in Serie A and has become a key figure in coach Gasperini’s squad. Although his price tag is also estimated at around €40 million, the deal is seen as less risky and offers comprehensive technical attributes that align with Flick’s project.
What stands out is that Lookman has a humble personality, far removed from media spotlight—an aspect that has caught the attention of the club’s management, who view him as a player capable of supporting Lamine Yamal and Raphinha without generating controversy or creating internal pressure.
A final decision has yet to be made, but what is certain is that Flick will have the final say in determining the identity of the new winger.
Will Barcelona succeed in securing this “quiet deal,” which could prove to be one of the biggest technical additions of next season?
