The 2025/26 season doesn’t appear to be an ordinary one for Barcelona, especially in midfield, which has become so crowded that it’s creating a real dilemma for German coach Hansi Flick. Although he has a strong belief in the youth project, balancing emerging talent with established stars has become a significant challenge.
Barcelona currently boasts a number of prominent midfielders, most notably Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, Gavi, Fermín López, and Dani Olmo, all fiercely competing for starting spots. With Marc Bernal expected to return from his long-term injury, the margin for playing time may narrow even further for other players.
In this context, questions are beginning to arise regarding the future of Marc Casado, who shone at the start of last season and was considered one of Camp Nou’s rising stars. However, he failed to maintain that momentum and gradually lost his place, eventually becoming a substitute in most matches.
Although Flick still considers Casado a “reliable backup,” his position in the squad no longer seems secure, especially following the recovery of Rodrigo Hernández, which further limits Casado’s chances, even with the Spanish national team under Luis de la Fuente.
On the other hand, the German coach has reaffirmed his confidence in Gavi, who was previously linked with a potential departure. Flick’s trust in the player has been solidified thanks to their good relationship and Gavi’s strong performances, as seen in the team’s first friendly of the summer, where he was one of the standout players on the pitch.
Given these circumstances, Casado has emerged as a leading candidate to leave the team, with Atlético Madrid showing serious interest. Reports indicate that coach Diego Simeone is unhappy with the reinforcements he’s received so far and is seriously considering making an official move for Casado.
Barcelona’s management, for their part, are open to selling him if a satisfactory financial offer arrives, especially with the midfield being so congested and the need to rebalance the squad. Are we on the verge of an unexpected summer transfer? Could Casado be the next name to depart Camp Nou?
