Tensions are escalating within Real Madrid between Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and the team’s Spanish coach, Xabi Alonso, amid uncertainty surrounding the club’s goalkeeping future. Courtois, considered one of the world’s most accomplished goalkeepers, is feeling growing unease following recent developments in the club’s technical planning.
In a surprising move, a Spanish press source revealed that Xabi Alonso has asked the club to sign a young goalkeeper as the long-term successor to Courtois. This request reportedly came as a shock to Courtois, who believes he is still in top form and has several years left at the highest level, creating visible tension between the two parties.
Despite his frustration, the Belgian goalkeeper understands that the club is looking to plan for the future — especially given his age, now 33, and the fact that his contract is set to expire next June. Nevertheless, Courtois is unwilling to relinquish his starting position this season, insisting that his vast experience and continued performance are key to maintaining Real Madrid’s defensive stability.
Courtois is expected to make his La Liga debut for the new season against Osasuna at the Santiago Bernabéu on August 19, where he hopes to reaffirm his status as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
