In a decisive technical move, German coach Hansi Flick chose to be clear and direct with all Barcelona players, especially those who are not part of his core plans for the new season. One of the most prominent names to receive this message was young midfielder Marc Casado, whom Flick clearly informed that his chances of playing this season would be almost nonexistent.
Despite Casado’s consistent performances last season, which made him one of the most reliable players in the squad, the situation changed drastically towards the end of the campaign, and he was no longer seen as a tactical option, especially with Frenkie de Jong returning to form.
According to sources close to the club, Flick told the 22-year-old that not only is he out of the starting lineup, but he is also not considered the first choice off the bench. He currently ranks behind Pablo Páez “Gavi” in the pecking order, and his standing may drop further with the anticipated return of Marc Bernal after fully recovering from a knee injury.
Despite the high regard Casado enjoys at Camp Nou, from both the coaching staff and management, several European clubs have opened talks with the player, aiming to convince him to embrace a new challenge away from Barcelona, capitalizing on his declining role within the team.
So far, neither Joan Laporta nor sporting director Deco has shown any genuine interest in selling the player, especially given his strong commitment and professionalism both on and off the pitch. However, the club’s challenging financial position makes a potential sale a viable option if an offer exceeding €50 million is received.
Nonetheless, Marc Casado is still betting on his opportunity at Barcelona and has made it clear to the management that he is not currently interested in foreign offers, determined instead to honor his contract until the end.
If the sporting situation remains unchanged during the first half of the season, the upcoming winter transfer window may provide an opportunity to reassess the situation, both for the club and the player. As Flick told him, “If you are not happy, we can consider the options available in January.”
