Barcelona returned from England with a valuable 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in their opening match of the 2025/26 Champions League group stage, in an exciting encounter at St. James’ Park.

Despite the joy of victory and the remarkable brilliance of English star Marcus Rashford, who scored both goals for the Catalan side, the news coming from the Barcelona camp was far from encouraging.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the team suffered an unexpected blow during the match when young defender Pau Cubarsí was forced to leave the field due to pain in his left knee. The discomfort had been present since the first half but worsened after Rashford’s second goal and the subsequent celebrations.

The incident was not captured live due to the broadcast focusing on the celebration, but the coaching staff quickly responded to the request for a substitution. Cubarsí left the field and was replaced by Andreas Christensen in the 69th minute, coinciding with Ferran Torres coming on for Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona’s medical staff is now awaiting the results of further tests scheduled for tomorrow, as there are growing concerns that Cubarsí may miss the upcoming La Liga fixture against Getafe this weekend.
