Barcelona faces a genuine defensive challenge following the serious injury to Danish player Andreas Christensen, whose contract expires in June, and the uncertainty surrounding Ronald Araujo’s future, as he could leave if a suitable offer arrives. These circumstances have forced the club’s management to search for strong replacements to bolster the defense in line with Hansi Flick’s style, despite financial constraints and high wages.
In this search, several options have emerged, most notably two players who could join on loan until the end of the season: Nathan Aké and Axel Disasi, who have struggled for playing time at Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively.
Another option that has strongly attracted Barcelona’s attention is young English defender Marc Guehi, one of the best defenders in the Premier League and a key player for the England national team. He was close to joining Liverpool last summer for €70 million. At Camp Nou, his physical and technical abilities were highly valued, but his high financial demands, coupled with a transfer fee ranging between €20 and €30 million, led Barcelona’s management to temporarily shelve the deal, especially given the possibility of signing him for free next June.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid is closely monitoring the situation. Éder Militão’s injury, David Alaba’s recurring fitness problems, and doubts surrounding the performances of Dani Carvajal and Raúl Asensio have prompted the club’s management to seriously consider signing the English defender. Xabi Alonso is urging President Florentino Pérez to act quickly before the transfer window closes.
