Barcelona elections turn into a major battle… Club legends overturn the table on Laporta

FC Barcelona has entered a pivotal phase that could reshape its administrative future, following the official announcement of an upcoming presidential election. This comes amidst widespread public anticipation and early maneuvering by prominent figures both within and outside the club.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has settled the debate, announcing the date for the Catalan club’s presidential elections. He confirmed that the anticipated event will take place this year, reflecting his confidence in his position and his ability to remain at Camp Nou.

According to the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the official election date has been set for March 15. Laporta commented that the electoral process will be exemplary, with an anticipated high turnout from club members.

Notably, Laporta announced his intention to run for another presidential term, having returned to the Barcelona presidency in 2021 for his second term. He bases his decision on his recent achievements, most notably regaining control of domestic competitions last season.

However, the situation is not simple this time around, as predictions point to a fierce electoral battle, especially with rumors circulating about the potential endorsement of certain Barcelona legends, such as Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernández, which could significantly alter the balance of power.

Laporta’s main rival is the renowned businessman Víctor Font, who is returning to the presidential race after his defeat in the 2021 elections. He has raised the bar for his promises to the Blaugrana fans, chief among them his attempt to bring the legendary Lionel Messi back to Camp Nou.

Xabi Vilajoana and Marc Serra have also announced their candidacies. While their chances are considered slimmer compared to Laporta and Font, they could still exert pressure on the current president, particularly given their past criticisms of his administration, both regarding the financial crisis and the Messi transfer saga.

Joan Laporta is one of the most prominent figures in Barcelona’s administrative history, having served as president of the club for two terms: the first between 2003 and 2010, and the second from 2021 until now, amid widespread assessments that he is the most likely candidate to continue if he maintains the support of the electoral base within the club.
