Luis de la Fuente is not planning any major changes to his current Spanish national team squad, relying on the core group that has achieved considerable success since he took over as manager. This means that several talented players will have to wait, despite deserving a place in the squad, including Álvaro Carreras, Eric García, Alberto Molero, and Yerimay Hernández.
Carreras: The Real Madrid Star Who Stunned Everyone
Álvaro Carreras was one of Real Madrid’s most prominent signings last summer, costing the club around €50 million on the recommendation of Xabi Alonso. He is now the undisputed first-choice left-back for Los Blancos, delivering outstanding performances that have made him a key player for Real Madrid this season.
With this impressive form, many expected him to make a strong impact with the Spanish national team, perhaps even securing a place in the 2026 World Cup squad in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
De la Fuente Puts Up Obstacles
However, it seems the Spanish manager will not make things easy for Carreras. According to The Mirror, De la Fuente prefers to rely on Marc Cucurella and Alejandro Grimaldo, who have proven their worth at Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen, respectively, and were key players in the previous European Championship.
Therefore, barring any last-minute injuries, Cucurella and Grimaldo are likely to be selected for the World Cup at the expense of Carreras.
Defensive Weakness Threatens His Chances
One of the main reasons for Carreras’s exclusion is his defensive vulnerability. He tends to push forward without fully fulfilling his defensive duties, which has led to some criticism at Real Madrid.
De la Fuente prioritizes a solid back line as the foundation of the team, making Cucurella the safer option on the left wing.
