Competition within Barcelona no longer allows for any dip in form, a situation currently affecting young Alejandro Balde after tactical decisions disrupted his plans and reshuffled the left-back position.
Flick Changes the Game
In the last two La Liga matches against Girona and Levante, Balde did not start. He played limited minutes in one game and remained on the bench in the other, clearly indicating his diminished standing within the team.
German coach Hansi Flick preferred to use João Cancelo on the left flank, despite his natural position being on the right. This decision sent strong tactical signals, especially after Cancelo’s impressive performance, which earned him the Man of the Match award in one of the games.
Unusual Decline
Of the last five official matches, Balde started only two: against Real Mallorca in La Liga and against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey.
This drop in playing time is unprecedented for the young player, especially since he is not currently injured. His recent inconsistency, contrasted with Cancelo’s rising form, appears to have created direct competition that could permanently reshape the left-back position.
An Open Battle Until the End of the Season
Flick chose to keep Jules Koundé in his position, moving Cancelo to the left instead of giving Balde a chance to prove himself. This reflects either a temporary tactical decision or the beginning of a permanent shift in the starting lineup.
The message is clear: no one is guaranteed a place at Barcelona.
For Balde, the next phase will be a true test, either regaining confidence and a starting position or finding himself relegated to the bench during the most crucial period of the season.
