Barcelona, under the guidance of German coach Hansi Flick, are facing a new midfield crisis after key player Frenkie de Jong suffered an injury during the club’s latest training session, according to the Spanish newspaper Sport on Thursday.
De Jong’s hamstring injury could sideline him for three to four weeks, meaning he will miss upcoming matches in all competitions, pending the results of final medical tests.
This injury adds pressure on Flick, who had just begun to rely on his full squad following Pedri’s return against Levante. De Jong’s absence leaves a significant void in midfield, as the Dutchman is an indispensable part of the starting lineup.
If the diagnosis is confirmed, De Jong will miss the following matches:
The second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Atlético Madrid.
The Champions League round of 16 against Paris Saint-Germain or Newcastle United.
La Liga matches against Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla, and Rayo Vallecano.
This setback comes at a crucial stage of the season and increases the challenges for Barcelona in maintaining their performance across all competitions, putting Flick to a major test in managing the midfield without one of his most important players.
