The former Barcelona star tried to return to Camp Nou… but Flick immediately blocked the deal to protect Lamine Yamal!

While Lionel Messi’s name frequently surfaces in Barcelona presidential election campaigns, often with promises of his future return, reports have revealed that another star was already close to a comeback just a year ago.

In January 2025, Neymar Jr. personally contacted club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco, offering his services after terminating his contract with Al-Hilal, following a period of instability caused by recurring injuries.

Economic Allure and Technical Reluctance

The idea of the Brazilian star’s return held enormous marketing potential, as advertising revenue, image rights, and shirt sales were expected to increase significantly. The limited attacking options at the time also made the proposal financially attractive.

However, German coach Hansi Flick quickly intervened and rejected the idea for clear technical reasons. Flick saw no need to sign a player past his peak and doubted Neymar’s willingness to accept a reserve role within the team.

Protecting the Dressing Room and Lamine Yamal

The coach was satisfied with the performance of the young duo, especially Lamine Yamal and Rafinha on the wings, and did not want to introduce a player who might threaten team stability or affect the atmosphere in the dressing room.

According to Globo Esporte, the main reason for rejecting the deal was to protect the club’s youth-focused project, with Lamine Yamal at the forefront. Flick believed that signing Neymar, given his age, medical history, and off-field behavior, could be a distraction or negatively impact the young player’s development.

The situation is reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s earlier decision to let Ronaldinho go, in order to safeguard Lionel Messi’s rise at Barcelona.

Flick’s decision was neither emotional nor driven by marketing considerations, but based on a long-term vision that prioritized stability and the protection of young talent over a deal that would have generated massive media attention.
