Reports indicate that German coach Hansi Flick is trying to convince Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, to make an offer for Newcastle United’s German striker Nick Waltmead during the summer transfer window.
Despite Waltmead’s underwhelming £69 million move from Stuttgart in the summer of 2015, Flick sees him as the ideal addition to the Catalan club’s attack. The 24-year-old has scored 10 goals and provided 4 assists in 42 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side and is under contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2031.
The Reason Behind Flick’s Insistence on Signing Waltmead
Flick faces clear attacking challenges: Robert Lewandowski is 37 years old, while Ferran Torres has struggled with inconsistency. Therefore, Flick is calling for the signing of a new striker who can impose his attacking style, win physical duels, and provide the team with greater fluidity in the penalty area.
Waltmead fits Flick’s vision perfectly: he has suitable height, excellent ball control, and strong potential for continued development. He’s not a media sensation, but he can change the dynamics of an attack through hard work and goals, making him the ideal option to bolster Barcelona’s attacking force.
Challenges Facing Barcelona
Despite Deco’s desire to sign big-name players like Erling Haaland from Manchester City or Harry Kane from Bayern Munich, reports indicate that the high costs make such deals impossible this summer, strengthening Flick’s position in pushing for Waltmead.
Although the deal may face difficulties, Flick believes Waltmead can be a key element in Barcelona’s attacking plans next season by increasing efficiency in the penalty area and reducing reliance on individual skill.
