Barcelona are continuing their search for defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window, after Iñigo Martínez’s departure to the Saudi league left a clear void in defense.
Despite coach Hansi Flick’s reliance on the strong partnership of Pau Cubarsí and Eric García, the club’s management sees the need to sign a left-footed center-back to bolster the defensive system.
According to sources close to the club, Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni has emerged as the top choice for sporting director Deco. The player is highly regarded within the club, and he has reportedly given his initial approval to the idea of moving to Camp Nou.
However, Inter Milan are not opposed to a full sale, but are demanding a fee of at least €50 million, which poses a challenge for Barcelona given their current financial constraints.
Barcelona’s management is seeking to expedite negotiations to avoid a future increase in the player’s value, especially given his strong performances in upcoming international matches. Meanwhile, signing a striker remains a priority in their summer plans.
If the Bastoni deal falls through, Barcelona has identified a prominent alternative: Portuguese defender Gonçalo Inácio of Sporting Lisbon, who is being closely monitored by Deco after previous meetings with his agent.
It is estimated that Sporting might demand around €45 million, while Barcelona prefer not to exceed €30 million, which opens the door for lengthy negotiations in the coming weeks.
With the transfer market still active, Barcelona are entering a crucial phase in rebuilding their defense in preparation for the new season.
