Shock in Spain’s squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.. De la Fuente surprises everyone and excludes prominent Barcelona names despite winning La Liga!

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has announced his preliminary 55-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, featuring a strong Barcelona presence following the club’s La Liga title win.

The squad sees the return of Eric García and Xavi to the national team after their impressive performances for Barcelona this season, further strengthening the Catalan club’s representation within the Spanish national team.

However, the list also contains some notable surprises, most prominently the exclusion of Gerard Martín despite his excellent performances at left-back, as well as the absence of Alejandro Balde, with other players such as Cucurella, Grimaldo, and Sergio Gómez preferred at left-back.

Despite these omissions, Barcelona remains a key pillar of the Spanish national team, with a significant number of its stars included in the squad, most notably Pedri, Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsí, Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, Fermín López, and goalkeeper Joan García.

De la Fuente is scheduled to announce his final 26-man squad on May 25, amid much anticipation regarding the inclusion of several Barcelona players in the final roster.

The strong Catalan presence reaffirms that Barcelona remains one of the most important sources of talent for the Spanish national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
