Barcelona’s management continues its intensive activity in the summer transfer market to bolster its defense, having placed Argentine defender Cristian Romero, Tottenham Hotspur’s star, among its top targets in preparation for the new season.
According to Spanish reports, Barcelona is closely monitoring Tottenham’s situation in the Premier League, amid a belief within the Catalan club that Romero’s future could undergo a significant transformation in the coming period, especially with the increasing speculation surrounding his potential departure from the London club.
Barcelona’s management believes that the current circumstances could present a golden opportunity to finalize the deal for a lower fee than expected, particularly if Tottenham faces sporting or financial pressure in the near future.
Barcelona’s interest in signing Romero is part of Hansi Flick’s plan to rebuild the defensive system with experienced and strong-willed players. The Argentine defender is highly regarded by the coaching staff due to his ability to perform under pressure and lead the back line in big matches.
Meanwhile, Barcelona continues to work on strengthening its attacking line, with a strong desire within the club to retain Marcus Rashford and sign a new striker. This has led the management to set a specific financial limit for defensive signings during the current transfer window.
After the chances of signing high-priced players like Alessandro Bastoni diminished, Romero’s stock has risen within Barcelona, as he is seen as an option combining quality, experience, and negotiable financial terms.
Reports indicate that Tottenham may demand around €60 million to approve the player’s departure, although this figure could decrease if the club’s situation changes next season.
Despite Barcelona’s strong interest, the deal will not be easy, given the entry of other European clubs into the negotiations, most notably Atlético Madrid. Furthermore, the Catalan club continues to explore other defensive alternatives in case negotiations become more complicated.
