A Return to Training, But His Heart Remains in Barcelona: Star Defender’s Transfer Saga Takes a New Twist

João Cancelo is heading back to work this week, set to rejoin Al-Hilal’s pre-season training camp in Austria following his post-World Cup break.

According to reports from Arriyadiyah, the Portuguese full-back is expected back on Wednesday. However, his long-term future remains firmly up in the air as Barcelona continue to pursue a permanent deal for the defender.

He enjoyed another strong spell in Catalonia last season, quickly working his way into Hansi Flick’s starting lineup after returning on loan during the winter window. Across 23 appearances, he pitched in with two goals and three assists, proving to be a key outlet on the flank.

Unsurprisingly, the defender makes no secret of his desire to stay at the Camp Nou. Barcelona are equally eager to keep him, but talks with Al-Hilal have hit a standstill.

With just one year remaining on his contract, the Saudi Pro League side are open to selling him outright rather than sanctioning another temporary move. For now, he must fulfill his duties in Austria while waiting to see if Barça can bridge the gap and strike a deal before the transfer window closes.
