José Mourinho’s return to the Real Madrid dugout has not gone without controversy, and this time the criticism has come from someone who knows the Spanish giants extremely well, with club legend and former coach Jorge Valdano making comments that have raised major questions about Florentino Pérez’s decision to bring the Portuguese manager back to the helm.
Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid for a second spell, following his previous tenure between 2010 and 2013. He was appointed as the successor to Álvaro Arbeloa in an attempt by the club to return to the top of the competition and end Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga.

However, Valdano, who served as Real Madrid’s sporting director during Mourinho’s first spell before leaving his position, made no attempt to hide his surprise at the decision, stressing that football, society and even the people themselves have changed significantly over the years.
His comments went beyond simply questioning the decision, as Valdano raised an even more sensitive point by questioning whether Mourinho’s presence at the helm of Real Madrid makes sense once again.
Valdano Puts Mourinho’s Return Under the Microscope
Valdano believes that nearly 15 years after Mourinho’s first experience at the club, comparisons between the past and present are difficult, especially because the club, the manager and Florentino Pérez himself are no longer the same as they were back then.
“I don’t know what makes José Mourinho being in charge of this responsibility again make sense.. only the club knows.”
Those words were enough to ignite the debate, particularly because they came from one of the most prominent figures associated with Real Madrid’s history, rather than from an analyst with no direct connection to the club.
Valdano also pointed out that Pérez had previously moved toward a different type of coach when he appointed Xabi Alonso, before eventually dismissing him and seeing him later take charge of Chelsea, making the decision to bring Mourinho back another clear shift in the club’s direction.
At the same time, Valdano did not attempt to present his comments as a personal vendetta against the Portuguese coach, stressing that he holds no grudge against Mourinho and that their old disagreements are now in the past.
That point makes the comments even more significant, as it frames the criticism around the sporting decision itself rather than as an extension of the clash between the two men during Mourinho’s first spell.
Valdano was also not the only Real Madrid legend to express reservations about Mourinho’s return. Iker Casillas, who also had a tense relationship with the Portuguese manager during their time together in Madrid, previously stated that he had no personal problem with Mourinho, but did not want him as Real Madrid’s coach.
Mourinho now faces a huge task to prove that his return to the Santiago Bernabéu is not simply the revival of a name from the past, but a decision capable of taking Real Madrid back to the top.
With the season getting underway and the first official test against Espanyol approaching on August 22, the real answers will begin to emerge on the pitch.
