Erling Haaland is no longer simply an old dream for Barcelona, with new indications suggesting that the Catalan club could make another attempt to sign the Manchester City striker in the coming period. However, one important detail in the player’s contract could make the route to a potential deal very different from previous attempts.
Although Barcelona continue to hold strong interest in the Norwegian star, securing his signature would be extremely difficult. The Catalan giants could be prepared to enter a major deal, but a significant obstacle stands in the way of any approach, and it is directly linked to Haaland’s contractual situation at Manchester City.

According to a report from Football Insider, Barcelona remain seriously interested in signing Haaland and could consider making a record offer as early as next year. However, the striker’s long-term contract with Manchester City makes any direct negotiations considerably more complicated.
Haaland renewed his Manchester City contract at the beginning of 2025, committing his future to the club until 2034. Crucially, the agreement does not contain an active release clause until the end of the 2028-29 season, giving the English club a very strong position in any potential negotiations.
As a result, if Barcelona want to sign Haaland, there will be no easy route to completing the deal. The Catalan club would have to negotiate directly with Manchester City and convince the Premier League giants to sell a striker who remains a central part of their plans.
Barcelona are currently searching for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, who left the club at the end of last season. Julian Alvarez had been identified as the club’s preferred target, but Barcelona were unable to complete a deal and eventually turned to Gabriel Jesus as a short-term solution.

That is where Haaland becomes such an attractive option, particularly given his extraordinary goalscoring record. Since joining Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund, the Norwegian striker has scored 168 goals in 204 appearances for the English club, while he has already scored six times in six appearances at the start of the current season.
Haaland also strengthened his global reputation at the World Cup, scoring seven goals in five matches and continuing to establish himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football.
Hansi Flick is understood to be a major admirer of Haaland’s ability, with the German coach keen to add a world-class out-and-out striker to his squad in order to help Barcelona maintain their advantage in the domestic battle with Real Madrid.
However, Barcelona’s interest is complicated by Manchester City’s position. The Premier League club has little reason to sell Haaland, particularly while the striker remains a central figure in its sporting project and is tied down to a long-term contract.
For Barcelona, Haaland remains an ideal long-term number nine, but his current contractual situation means any attempt to sign him would require an enormous financial commitment.
With no active release clause before the end of the 2028-29 season and Manchester City under no obvious pressure to negotiate, Barcelona would need to produce an extraordinary offer to convince the English club to part ways with its star striker.
