The Barcelona transfer that collapsed over €11m… A young defender was close to Camp Nou

Barcelona were closer than many expected to completing a defensive signing, but the deal ultimately collapsed over a major difference in valuation. What made the situation even more notable was the relatively modest figure Barcelona were prepared to pay for the young defender.

The Catalan club had identified a promising defensive option as a potential project for the future, but negotiations never reached an agreement after his club stood firm on a much higher asking price.

The player in question was Jorge Salinas, the 19-year-old Racing Santander defender who attracted Barcelona’s attention following an impressive promotion campaign. Salinas’ versatility made him particularly appealing, as he can operate both as a left-sided centre-back and as a left-back.

Barcelona were prepared to invest around €5 million in the youngster, with reports indicating that their maximum valuation was in the region of €4 million to €6 million. The Catalan club viewed Salinas primarily as a long-term investment rather than an immediate first-team solution.

However, Racing Santander had a completely different valuation of their young defender. Following the club’s promotion, Salinas’ release clause increased to €16 million, putting Barcelona’s proposed fee well below the amount required to secure his signature.

Salinas had played an important role during Racing Santander’s promotion campaign, making 33 appearances and providing six assists. His performances, combined with his ability to play in multiple defensive positions, helped increase his value and attracted attention from several clubs.

Barcelona ultimately failed to close the deal because of the significant financial gap between what they were willing to pay and Racing Santander’s demands. The Catalan side wanted to keep the investment within a limited range, while Racing remained firm on the much higher valuation attached to the defender.

As a result, what initially looked like a possible low-cost defensive addition for Barcelona ended without an agreement, leaving the Catalan club to look elsewhere while Salinas remained with Racing Santander.
