Shock Obstacle for Joao Felix’s Barcelona Return: A Hidden Clause in His Al Nassr Contract Could Decide His Future
He dreams of returning to Barcelona, and his agent has told the Catalan club he openly wants to come back to the Camp Nou. But an unexpected twist has suddenly emerged that could turn everything upside down, after it emerged that the decision on his future may not be in his hands at all.
The details reveal a hidden clause in the star’s current contract that gives his club the right to extend his stay without needing his signature, at a time when Barcelona do not appear to see the deal as a priority.
The player in question is Portuguese forward Joao Felix of Saudi side Al Nassr. Spanish outlet Sport reported two days ago that he wants to return to Europe once his spell in Saudi Arabia ends and that his big goal is to go back to Barcelona, where he played on loan in the 2023-24 season.
However, 365Scores claims that the contract Felix signed with Al Nassr includes a clause allowing the Saudi club to extend his deal unilaterally, as reported by Sport.
According to the information, Al Nassr can trigger the extension without a new signature from Joao Felix, provided the conditions set out in the contract the Portuguese player accepted are met. The clause covers details such as the length of the extension, the financial compensation and the deadline for activating it.
That gives the Saudi club a tool to keep the forward beyond 30 June 2027. Al Nassr officials are planning to meet his agent Jorge Mendes soon to discuss his future. The club also wants to know the player’s position, although it insists it has the contractual right to trigger the extension if the agreed conditions are met.
For now, there is no final decision on his future. Joao Felix wants to return to European football and is looking for a team in the Champions League. Barcelona are his first choice, and Mendes has reportedly told the club his client wants to come back to the Camp Nou as a free agent.
Barcelona are aware of Felix’s interest, but his return is not a priority right now. The Portuguese usually starts on the left with a tendency to drift inside, and he would face competition from Gordon and Adeyemi, whose profiles better suit what Hansi Flick wants in that area.
Even so, the sporting department led by Deco will have to assess the squad’s needs at the end of the season before considering a deal that, if he is free, would be attractive because he could be signed without a transfer fee and could also play as an attacking midfielder or false nine.
If he does return, it would be Joao Felix’s second spell at Barcelona. He arrived on loan from Atletico Madrid in summer 2023 and played 44 official games under Xavi Hernandez, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists. He never secured a regular starting place, and the club decided not to continue the deal, despite the special faith president Joan Laporta had in him.
