Real Madrid Issue Strong Statement Against Tebas and Call for New La Liga Leadership
Real Madrid have taken their latest confrontation with La Liga president Javier Tebas to another level, issuing an official statement in which the club strongly criticised the way the league chief has repeatedly addressed the Spanish giants.
The club went beyond simply responding to Tebas’ latest comments, raising concerns about what it described as the use of his institutional position to publicly attack Real Madrid and comment on matters related to the club’s sporting strategy. The strongest part of the statement, however, came toward the end, when Real Madrid called for leadership committed to neutrality in Spanish professional football.
The statement came after Tebas criticised Real Madrid and head coach Jose Mourinho following the club’s complaints about refereeing decisions during the Madrid derby against Atletico, which Real Madrid lost 2-1. Tebas rejected the idea that refereeing decisions were responsible for the result and also questioned the way the club expressed its complaints.
Real Madrid said it considered it unacceptable for the La Liga president to use his institutional position to repeatedly disparage and attack the club.
The club argued that the issue had gone beyond a simple difference of opinion, accusing Tebas of repeatedly making Real Madrid the target of his public interventions.
Real Madrid also took particular issue with Tebas’ latest comments because they came in response to an article written by an independent journalist for a digital media outlet, after which the La Liga president also commented on the club and its sporting strategy.
According to Real Madrid, such interventions are inappropriate for someone whose responsibility is to represent and protect the interests of all La Liga clubs rather than repeatedly engaging in public disputes with one particular team.
The club also criticised Tebas for using his personal platforms to comment on Real Madrid, arguing that the league president should instead use his position to strengthen confidence in the institutions responsible for ensuring the impartiality of the competition.
In one of the clearest parts of its statement, Real Madrid said Spanish professional football urgently needs a leader capable of managing the competition and developing its full potential while maintaining a fundamental commitment to neutrality.
The club went further by explaining its view of the role of the La Liga president, stressing that the president is not the owner of the competition, but rather a manager whose responsibility is to serve the clubs that make up the league and have entrusted him with its administration.
The escalation comes just days after the Madrid derby, which generated significant controversy over several refereeing decisions. Real Madrid complained about a number of incidents, while Tebas defended the officiating and criticised what he considered inappropriate pressure on referees.
The dispute has therefore moved beyond a disagreement over refereeing decisions and public comments, becoming a direct public confrontation between Real Madrid and the president of La Liga, particularly after the club made the neutrality of the league’s leadership a central part of its official statement.
