Barcelona Monitor Arthur Dias… Deco Sends His Trusted Man to Scout the Brazilian Defender

Barcelona have started looking ahead in the search for defensive reinforcements, but this time their attention is focused away from the usual high-profile names. The club have identified a young Brazilian talent, and the interest appears significant enough for the sporting department to move from simply monitoring the player to watching him closely in person.

The player in question is Arthur Dias, the 19-year-old Athletico Paranaense centre-back who has attracted attention within Barcelona, including from sporting director Deco. According to reports from SPORT, Barcelona sent João Amaral, the club’s head of scouting, to Brazil to watch the defender in person.

Arthur Dias is already more than just a promising name on paper. He has reached 50 appearances for Athletico Paranaense’s first team and previously captained Brazil’s Under-20 side before recently receiving a call-up to the senior national team under Carlo Ancelotti.

What attracts Barcelona is his technical profile. Dias is a left-footed centre-back standing around 1.88 metres tall, with the ability to build from the back and contribute through both short and long passing. At the same time, he remains a developing player who still needs to improve his defensive intensity and gain more experience at the highest level.

Barcelona’s interest has also moved beyond simply having the defender on a scouting list. João Amaral watched Dias directly during Athletico Paranaense’s match against Bahia, giving the club an opportunity to gather more detailed information before deciding whether to make a move in the transfer market.

However, Barcelona are not alone in monitoring the Brazilian defender. Several European clubs have reportedly followed his progress, while his contract with Athletico Paranaense runs until December 2028. Reports have also suggested that the Brazilian club value him at around €30 million after rejecting a Tottenham proposal worth approximately €21 million for 80 percent of his economic rights.

For Barcelona, the idea is to move before the player’s value rises further, particularly because left-footed centre-backs are increasingly difficult and expensive to find on the market. The club are therefore studying the possibility of signing a young defender who could continue developing within the first-team project while also keeping more experienced options under consideration.

There is currently no reliable indication of an official Barcelona offer or an agreement to complete the transfer. However, sending a senior scouting official to watch Arthur Dias in person, combined with Deco’s reported interest in the defender, shows that the Brazilian centre-back has become a serious name on Barcelona’s radar.
