Scaloni Reveals Why Lo Celso and De Paul Will Only Play in Messi’s Farewell Match
The presence of Giovani Lo Celso and Rodrigo De Paul only for Argentina’s final match of the international break was never likely to be treated as a minor detail, especially with the game set to mark Lionel Messi’s final appearance for his country. However, Lionel Scaloni’s latest comments have revealed that the decision also reflects the coaching staff’s plans for the next stage of the national team.
Scaloni addressed the growing speculation surrounding the two midfielders, making it clear that their involvement in Messi’s farewell match does not mean the door has been closed on them. At the same time, he stressed that the coaching staff wants to use the other upcoming matches to assess different players and give them an opportunity to prove themselves.
The Argentina coach explained that the staff wants to see other players first, pointing to the previous situation involving Angel Di Maria, who was also left out on one occasion to allow other players to receive opportunities.
Scaloni said the same approach currently applies to Lo Celso and De Paul, insisting that the doors are not closed to either player in any way. However, he believes the upcoming matches represent an important opportunity for younger players to show what they can offer and make the most of their chance.
The Argentina coach also acknowledged everything Lo Celso and De Paul have contributed to the national team over the years, while stressing that they are not currently part of the squad for the other matches. Their future, he explained, will be assessed later, with the immediate priority being to see other players.
Argentina are scheduled to face Bolivia on September 30, Burkina Faso on October 3 and Benin on October 6 at the Monumental Stadium. The final match will serve as Messi’s farewell appearance for Argentina, with the AFA confirming that Messi, De Paul and Lo Celso will take part in that final friendly only.
Scaloni’s comments therefore leave the door open for Lo Celso and De Paul to remain part of Argentina’s plans in the future, while also making it clear that the coach wants to use this stage to test new players before shaping the squad for the next phase.
