Carvajal Closing In on LaLiga Return as Getafe Negotiate With Real Madrid’s Former Captain
After months of uncertainty about his future, one of Real Madrid’s most important leaders of recent years appears close to returning to Spanish football, but this time in the shirt of a club many Madrid fans would never have expected.
Talks are moving in a positive direction, there is even talk of a medical, and waiting for him is a coach who has been asking for reinforcements since the start of the season for a squad competing on three fronts.
The player is Dani Carvajal, the veteran right-back who has been without a club since his Real Madrid contract expired on June 30. Spanish newspaper ABC reported on Tuesday that José Bordalás’s Getafe are negotiating to sign him, as relayed by Mundo Deportivo.
Italian reports had claimed last week that Carvajal had been offered to several Serie A clubs, before Getafe moved strongly into the picture in the last few hours.
According to the same source, the talks are going well, and there has even been talk of the 34-year-old, who has a long injury history, undergoing a medical with Getafe, who are 11th in LaLiga with eight points from seven matchdays.
The arrival of Carvajal, a six-time European champion among many other titles with Real Madrid, would be a major boost for Bordalás, who has been asking for a bigger squad since pre-season to compete in LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Conference League.
After Getafe’s latest 1-0 win over Málaga, sealed by an Iván Azón goal, Bordalás complained: “This is relentless. That’s how I feel and how the players feel. They are making a titanic effort and many of them are running on fumes.”
Ironically, Bordalás already has Andrés García at right-back, on loan from Unai Emery’s Aston Villa until the end of the season, as well as Kiko Femenía, who has been out since early September with a torn biceps femoris in his left hamstring.
If the deal is completed, Carvajal would return to LaLiga through a very different door than Real Madrid, after a long career in which he won everything there was to win with the Spanish giants.
