Scary scenes in the Premier League: a world-class goalkeeper stretchered off as the game stops for 10 minutes

Premier League fans lived through some frightening moments today, as Everton against Chelsea was stopped for a long time after a violent collision that ended with a world-class goalkeeper being carried off on a stretcher.

The scene caused alarm in the stands and among the players after the keeper showed a worrying sign right after the impact, before two goals took the headlines and the London club took all three points.

According to NBC Sports, Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite after parrying a free kick midway through the second half, with both players left down on the pitch.

NBC described the incident as very scary, with Martinez appearing to make an involuntary fencing response to the collision. The game was paused for around 10 minutes as trainers rushed on to treat the Argentine, who was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by 21-year-old Belgian keeper Mike Penders.

Chelsea won 2-0 thanks to a Pedro Neto brace: the first after the break from Joao Pedro’s cross, and the second in the 90th minute when a free kick was blocked by the wall. The referee added a minimum of 11 minutes of stoppage time.

The win lifts Chelsea into the top four, while Everton suffered their first league defeat of the season. An update on Martinez’s condition is awaited.
