Frenkie de Jong Sends Clear Message to Flick: “I Don’t Want to Get Used to Being a Substitute”

Frenkie de Jong has sent a clear message to Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, insisting that he does not want to get used to being a substitute as he targets a return to the starting XI.

The Dutch midfielder understands that he must rebuild his match fitness gradually after a lengthy spell out with a serious knee injury sustained while representing the Netherlands at the World Cup. However, he stressed that his long-term ambition is to play consistently and reclaim his place in Barcelona’s strongest team as soon as possible.

Speaking to Ziggo Sport, De Jong explained his position on potentially remaining on the bench: “No, and I don’t want to get used to that. But of course I understand the current situation, especially after a long absence from the pitch. I know the return has to be gradual, and that I won’t start matches straight away, but in the long term I want to play consistently. My goal is to return to the starting XI as soon as possible.”

The Netherlands international also said that he feels physically ready to return, despite the intense competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield. He believes he has a role to play in Flick’s team and views the battle for starting positions as an added motivation to prove his value.

Barcelona had medically cleared De Jong to return after his injury, and he subsequently rejoined the matchday squads. However, he had yet to play a competitive minute this season at the time of the report. His return to the starting line-up will depend on regaining match sharpness and the coaching staff’s assessment of his readiness.

De Jong also offered insight into his preferred role, explaining that he sees himself more as a number 6 or number 8 than a number 10. Those positions, in his view, suit his game better and allow him to be more involved in possession and the build-up play.

The Barcelona midfielder also addressed the criticism he has faced during his absence. He said he understands why some supporters become frustrated when they see him playing for the Netherlands but unavailable for the club they support.

De Jong noted that criticism and controversy often intensify when he is unable to play. He acknowledged the fans’ perspective and explained that the injury proved more serious than initially expected. His inability to help the team was frustrating for him, the club and the supporters, while the situation also led to speculation about his circumstances.

The midfielder, who is one of Barcelona’s captains, insisted that he now feels fit and strong and is eager to return to action. He also said he was available to play a few minutes against Real Madrid, although the final decision would depend on Flick’s assessment of his condition and the team’s needs.

Beyond his immediate fight for a starting place, De Jong remains determined to win the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona. He described the trophy as an important career objective and a personal dream. The Dutchman believes Barcelona have the technical quality to compete for the title, while recognising that small details and luck can also influence the outcome of knockout matches.

For now, De Jong’s priority is to regain his match rhythm and convince Flick that he can once again become a regular presence in Barcelona’s midfield. With strong competition for places and the player eager to return to the starting line-up, his reintegration will be an important storyline for the Catalan club in the coming weeks.
