Barcelona’s Defeat to Real Madrid Exposes Three Major Problems for Hansi Flick

Barcelona’s defeat to Real Madrid in a fiercely contested El Clásico was more than just a painful result. It exposed several concerns about Hansi Flick’s side and raised serious questions about their overall performance. With Barcelona’s supporters hoping for another memorable night to extend the team’s perfect start to the season, the details of the match revealed costly mistakes in one of the campaign’s biggest fixtures.

Behind Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory, however, were three significant talking points that went beyond the goals themselves: a defensive error that changed the course of the contest, a player who tried to make a difference despite receiving limited support, and a midfield that lacked the energy and authority Barcelona needed to impose themselves on the game.

Barcelona entered the match with the opportunity to move nine points clear of Real Madrid and record their tenth consecutive victory at the start of the 2026-27 season. Instead, the Catalan side suffered a 2-1 defeat to their traditional rivals, bringing their perfect league record to an end.

One of the match’s defining moments came through a costly mistake by defender Gerard Martín, who failed to clear the ball effectively under pressure from Kylian Mbappé. Rather than sending it away from danger, Martín’s attempted clearance struck the French forward and ended up in the net, giving Real Madrid the lead in the first half. Although the goal came in an unexpected fashion, the error reflected wider problems in Barcelona’s early performance.

The defensive mistake was not the only concern. Barcelona struggled with inaccurate passing and repeatedly surrendered possession, losing the ball 62 times during the opening half, according to the report. The team also lacked the attacking initiative required to trouble Real Madrid consistently and struggled to match their opponents physically in several key duels.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, emerged as one of Barcelona’s few positive performers despite the disappointing result. Making his first appearance in El Clásico, the winger repeatedly tried to create opportunities through his attacking movement and willingness to take on defenders. However, he received limited support from his teammates throughout much of his time on the pitch.

According to the report, Gordon lost possession only three times and recorded an impressive pass-completion rate of 97.1%. He was also the only Barcelona player to put all of his shots on target. These figures highlighted his composure in possession and decision-making under pressure, particularly as the team struggled to build and finish attacking moves effectively.

The third major concern was Barcelona’s lack of energy and control in midfield. Pedri failed to reach his usual standards, while Rodri did not provide the physical presence and leadership expected in a contest against a side of Real Madrid’s calibre. Fermín López also struggled to gain the upper hand against his opponents in midfield.

Bernardo Silva, by contrast, performed more effectively in the midfield battles, making it harder for Barcelona to control the tempo of the match. The performance raised further questions about the team’s ability to cope with opponents who combine physical strength with tactical organisation, particularly when Barcelona’s midfield fails to perform at its usual level.

The defeat cost Barcelona the opportunity to establish a commanding nine-point advantage over Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. Instead, their lead over their rivals was reduced to three points, reopening the battle for the championship.

The result leaves Hansi Flick with several clear challenges to address, including defensive errors, inaccurate passing, unnecessary losses of possession and a lack of energy in midfield. Although Anthony Gordon’s individual performance offered some encouragement, Barcelona will need a more balanced collective display if they are to recover from the defeat and maintain their challenge for the La Liga title.
