After the PSG and El Clásico Setbacks, Barcelona Identify Four Defensive Options for January
Barcelona’s defensive problems are no longer limited to difficult matches; they have become a major issue for Hansi Flick as the January transfer window approaches. Following criticism after the games against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, the discussion around strengthening the back line has resurfaced, with the club reportedly looking for an experienced centre-back capable of making an immediate impact.
Finding the right player, however, will not be easy. The reported options range from a dream signing who would be extremely difficult to secure, to targets whose clubs may be reluctant to negotiate, as well as alternatives that could be more affordable. The key question is whether Barcelona can create the financial room needed to complete a defensive signing in January.

Reports have linked Barcelona with several centre-back options, including Croatia international Joško Gvardiol of Manchester City, Italy international Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan, Argentina international Lisandro Martínez of Manchester United and Brazilian defender Natan of Real Betis.
Gvardiol is among the players admired by Barcelona because of his ability to operate both at centre-back and left-back, as well as his physical strength and quality in possession. However, signing him would be extremely difficult, particularly after he extended his Manchester City contract until 2031. Previous reports have suggested that a major sanction against the English club could potentially change the situation, but that remains a conditional scenario and does not mean that negotiations over a Barcelona move are underway.
Bastoni is another highly regarded option, thanks to his experience and ability to organise the defence from the left side. Persuading Inter Milan to let him go, especially during the January window, would be difficult given his importance to the Italian club and the expected cost of any deal.

Lisandro Martínez, meanwhile, could offer Barcelona considerable experience in central defence. Reports have suggested that the Catalan club are monitoring his contractual situation at Manchester United. However, his future depends on the details of his contract and the possibility of an extension option being activated. His injury record is another concern that Barcelona would need to assess carefully before making a move.

Natan of Real Betis appears to be one of the alternatives that could be more financially attainable. Reports have placed his potential valuation in the region of €25 million to €30 million, plus possible add-ons. Any deal would still depend on Real Betis’ position and Barcelona’s willingness to allocate part of their budget to strengthening the defence.

Financial considerations remain central to Barcelona’s plans. The club may need to sell players or reduce its financial commitments before completing another signing. Flick’s desire to reinforce the back line does not necessarily mean a deal will be completed in January, particularly as reports about the potential targets have not established that an agreement has been reached with any of them.
With Barcelona looking for a defender who can adapt quickly and provide an immediate solution, the coming weeks could prove important in shaping the club’s transfer strategy. The final decision will depend on finding the right balance between the team’s sporting needs and the financial resources available to complete a deal.
