Barcelona identify first January departure as young talent faces exit to fund defensive signing

The future of one of the most prominent talents to emerge from Barcelona’s academy has unexpectedly come under threat. His status within the team has shifted from an undisputed starter to a player struggling to earn minutes, a development that could open the door to a departure during the upcoming January transfer window.

As Hansi Flick prepares to make important changes to his defensive line, the Catalan club’s hierarchy has begun considering difficult options to raise the funds needed for a new defensive signing, with reports identifying the player who could become the first departure in January.

According to Barca Universal, citing MARCA, Alejandro Balde has emerged as the leading candidate to leave Barcelona during the winter transfer window, with the club potentially needing to sell one of its players to finance the signing of a new centre-back.

Flick has called for defensive reinforcements, particularly given the team’s injury problems. The German coach wants to bring in a defender who can make a genuine difference rather than signing a player simply to increase the number of available options.

Reports suggest Barcelona’s financial situation could force the club to complete a sale before making a significant move in the transfer market. Selling Balde for a suitable fee could provide the financial flexibility needed to pursue a defensive target in January.

The Spanish full-back’s standing has declined noticeably this season. According to the report, he has failed to secure a starting place under Flick, who has yet to select him in the starting XI for a match.

Barcelona’s recent game against Deportivo Alaves offered a clear illustration of his situation. Flick preferred to start Brian Farinas, while Balde was given only around 30 minutes in the second half.

The report also suggests that competition for the left-back position could become even tougher for Balde with Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart in the picture, potentially reducing his opportunities further once the squad’s injured players return to full fitness.

Despite these developments, Balde does not appear keen on leaving. He rejected the possibility of a departure last summer and still hopes to regain Flick’s trust and earn another opportunity to prove his ability.

For Barcelona, parting ways with a player who came through the club’s academy and was once regarded as one of its brightest prospects would be a difficult decision. However, financial pressure and the need to strengthen the defence could put his future at the club in doubt ahead of January.

For now, Balde’s departure remains a possibility reported by the media, rather than an official decision announced by Barcelona.
