Real Madrid has welcomed FIFA’s decision to abandon its controversial proposal to partially sell the commercial rights to its competitions, describing the move as “good news for football, its institutions and, above all, for the millions of fans around the world.”<\/p>\n
In an official statement released on Sunday, the Spanish club expressed its appreciation to UEFA, the continental and national football associations, and all institutions that opposed the project “with responsibility and determination.” The club said their unity and sense of duty had played a decisive role in safeguarding the future of the game.<\/p>\n
Real Madrid stressed that clubs are the foundation of international football, as they identify, develop and nurture the players who ultimately represent their national teams and make tournaments such as the FIFA World Cup possible.<\/p>\n
“The World Cup and international football are, above all, events of public interest. They are part of the heritage of nations, supporters and society as a whole,” the statement said. “For this reason, they should never be treated as financial assets to be marketed for the benefit of a privileged few.”<\/p>\n
The club also reaffirmed its opposition to any initiative that seeks to monetize future commercial revenues without assuming the costs and risks borne by clubs. According to Madrid, football’s future revenues should not be transferred to outside investors who play no role in generating them.<\/p>\n
Real Madrid recalled that it had taken the same position against LaLiga’s agreement with private equity fund CVC, which pledged a share of clubs’ future audiovisual revenues for the next 50 years in exchange for investment. The club argued that mortgaging football’s long-term income sets a dangerous precedent that should not be repeated, either in Spain or internationally.<\/p>\n
FIFA announced on Saturday that it had withdrawn the proposed $20 billion commercial venture, which would have created a separate company to manage and commercialize the governing body’s media and commercial rights while opening the door to private investment.<\/p>\n
The project faced strong resistance from UEFA and several continental federations, with European football’s governing body reportedly warning it could boycott the FIFA World Cup if the plan moved forward.<\/p>\n
