Real Madrid is preparing for a crucial and decisive La Liga match as it visits its wounded rival, Barcelona, who were eliminated from the Champions League by Inter Milan in a very harsh scenario.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper Defensa Central, Ronald Araujo was forced to disable comments on his Instagram posts due to recent events. His mistakes against Acerbi and in the 4–3 loss to Inter Milan contributed to Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League. Despite recently renewing his contract until 2031, the player was offered to Real Madrid by his agent, and the Catalan club is now considering selling him after his performance against Inter.
Araujo tried to defend himself after the match, explaining on three separate occasions that he bore responsibility for the European exit. He said: “Do you think I lacked strength? At first, I was marking him and moving forward… and then, in the second instance, football is also about coverage, and these things are resolved.” Under these circumstances, anything seems possible in the summer.
The reactions from fans on social media were extremely harsh. One wrote: “I’m fed up… leave… you have no idea how much I’ll enjoy these days… another season of childish mistakes, another season of not learning… please leave the club… when I die, I want Araujo to leave my coffin…” Another added: “Araujo let Acerbi shoot inside the six-yard box in the 93rd minute. If your strength has become a weakness… just let me fall for the last time… some players have been proven to be overrated… Ronald, you have a problem…” These were some of the harsh reflections from Barcelona fans following a memorable European match.
The fans’ criticism was echoed by the sports media. Outlets such as Relief, Sport, Mundo Deportivo, AS, and Marca published scathing coverage of his performance, fueling speculation about a possible summer move to Premier League clubs or even Juventus, who have long expressed interest in signing him.
The summer is expected to bring significant changes for both Barcelona and Real Madrid. During the match, Araujo lost his spot to Thuram and failed to make a meaningful impact after coming on as a substitute in the 75th minute for Iñigo Martínez. He was also off in his marking for Inter’s third goal and made a mistake in the build-up to the fourth. Several media outlets have suggested that this may have been his final European appearance for Barcelona. It’s worth noting that his entourage had previously offered him to Real Madrid.
