The Spanish Football Federation’s Competitions Committee has announced a one-match suspension for Real Madrid player Federico Valverde following his straight red card in the La Liga match against Atlético Madrid.
Referee Montero issued Valverde the red card in the 77th minute of the Madrid derby, stating in his report that Valverde “kicked an opponent with excessive force while play was stopped.”
Initial expectations suggested the suspension could extend to two matches, particularly given the wording of the referee’s report. However, the Competitions Committee opted for the minimum penalty, meaning Valverde will miss only the match against Real Mallorca.
Despite the Technical Committee of Referees upholding the red card, the punishment was less severe than anticipated, sparking controversy within football circles.
Real Madrid immediately filed an official appeal against the decision, but it was rejected. The club has announced its intention to take the case to the Appeals Committee in the hope of reducing or overturning the suspension, although early indications are not favorable.
The issue remains under close scrutiny due to the sensitivity of refereeing decisions and their direct impact on competition in the Spanish league.
