Real Madrid’s decision to hand the reins back to José Mourinho earlier this summer raised eyebrows across the footballing world, but few have voiced their reservations as frankly as former club director Jorge Valdano.
Speaking with Portuguese outlet A Bola, the former Real Madrid player, manager, and sporting director admitted he struggled to see the rationale behind bringing the “Special One” back to the Santiago Bernabéu for a second stint.

“Florentino opted for a different type of coach. The truth is, there aren’t many available for Real Madrid. The options are dwindling,” Valdano noted. “I don’t know what the point is for José Mourinho to return to this responsibility; only the club knows.”
A Very Different Era
Reflecting on Mourinho’s first tenure—which began in 2010—Valdano poured cold water on expectations that the Portuguese manager could seamlessly replicate past triumphs or guarantee an immediate Champions League run.
“Almost fifteen years have passed,” Valdano pointed out. “Football is not the same, society is not the same, Florentino is not the same, and Mourinho certainly won’t be either. So, we’ll see what happens.”
Lingering Friction or Fair Assessment?
Valdano’s skepticism comes with context. The pair famously clashed during Mourinho’s initial spell in Madrid, an internal power struggle that ultimately led to Valdano exiting his role as general director in 2011 while Mourinho remained at the helm.
Despite their turbulent past, Valdano insisted his current critique stems from analysis rather than personal grudge:
“I’m the least resentful person in the world; conflicts don’t last long for me, I move on very easily.”
Despite the outside noise, Mourinho has driven an aggressive summer transfer campaign, reshaping the squad to fit his tactical vision. As the new season approaches, the pressure will be squarely on the Portuguese manager to turn high-profile squad rebuilding into immediate silverware and prove his detractors wrong.
