Legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas sparked a wave of controversy among Real Madrid fans after the team’s 1–1 draw against Real Betis, a result that further complicated the Royal Club’s position in the La Liga title race.
According to the newspaper Defensa Central, Casillas believes that signing French star Kylian Mbappé was not the ideal decision for the team. He argues that Real Madrid needed a different type of striker, one more similar in characteristics to Karim Benzema, such as Harry Kane, capable of playing the traditional center-forward role within the system.
A controversial tactical view: Casillas indicated that balance in the attacking line requires a true striker who excels at operating inside the penalty area and linking up play, a quality that complements the styles of Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo Goes, and Arda Güler. He believes this quality is lacking in the current squad.
A shocking solution… but!
In a provocative suggestion, Casillas hinted that Real Madrid’s return to dominance might require bold decisions, including sacrificing Mbappé and signing a traditional striker who would provide the team with greater balance in the attacking third.
Despite this, he emphasized that this scenario seems unlikely at the moment, given club president Florentino Pérez’s commitment to the project built around the French star, whom he considers a cornerstone of the team’s future.
A pivotal stage in the season
These statements come at a sensitive time, with the La Liga title race intensifying, increasing the pressure within Real Madrid and raising significant questions about the team’s future plans.
Amid fan debate and division within the coaching staff, the question remains: Does Real Madrid truly need a radical overhaul of its attack, or will the gamble on Mbappé ultimately pay off?
