Barcelona are preparing for what could become one of the most exciting nights in La Liga history, as they are just one step away from officially clinching the league title against arch-rivals Real Madrid in the highly anticipated El Clásico.
Hansi Flick’s team needs only a draw to officially secure the La Liga title, while a win would definitively end the title race before the final rounds, amidst a heated atmosphere and huge anticipation from fans at Camp Nou.
According to the plan set by the Spanish Football Federation, Barcelona will receive the La Liga trophy immediately after the final whistle if they secure the title against Real Madrid. This explains the expected presence of the Spanish Federation’s president, Rafael Louzán, in the VIP box during the match.
The Spanish Federation is adopting two different protocols for the trophy presentation. If the title is secured away from home, the trophy is presented at the following match at the champion’s stadium. However, if the title is clinched at home, the presentation ceremony can take place immediately after the match, which is the most likely scenario for the upcoming Clásico.
Spanish football has witnessed similar situations in recent years, most notably when Real Madrid won the 2021–2022 La Liga title after a resounding 4–0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabéu. The trophy was presented immediately amidst historic celebrations by the Merengues’ fans.
The biggest surprise, however, is that the trophy Barcelona might lift will be brand new. The Catalan club retained the previous version after winning the last league title, following an official amendment to the Spanish Football Federation’s regulations, approved by Rafael Louzán. This amendment allows the champion to keep the trophy permanently instead of returning it at the end of the season, as was previously the case.
Barcelona fans are eagerly anticipating a moment that could become one of the most widely shared images of the season, should the team manage to secure La Liga against Real Madrid in the Clásico, a match of such significance and historical importance in the Spanish football landscape.
