Coventry thrash Newcastle 4-1 to end a 25-year wait for a Premier League home win
Nobody expected Monday night in the Premier League to end like this. The newly promoted side wrote a historic page against one of the league’s big names, and Newcastle left with a result that will be remembered for a long time.
A wait of more than a quarter of a century ended in a single night, and the numbers from the match show just how big a shock Matthias Jaissle’s side suffered.
Frank Lampard’s Coventry City thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 on Monday night in the Premier League, earning the club’s first Premier League home win in more than 25 years.
Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute after goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down Sidiki Cherif in the box. It was Coventry’s first Premier League home goal in more than a quarter of a century.
Early in the second half, Cherif made it 2-0 in the 48th minute on his first Premier League start, before defender Sven Botman pulled one back with a superb strike in the 70th minute, his first goal since February.
But the closing stages were a disaster for Newcastle. Ellis Simms pounced on an error from Joelinton to make it 3-1 in the 81st minute, and Stephen Mfuni added a fourth in the 86th minute to seal a historic night.
Defender Bobby Thomas starred for Coventry, blocking a Harvey Barnes shot and clearing an effort off the line just before half-time, while goalkeeper Carl Rushworth made several saves from Barnes and Yoane Wissa.
Jaissle made one change from the side that beat Hull City 2-1, with Nico Gonzalez replacing Sean Steur, while Joelinton came off the bench in a game before which the coach had spoken about the need to be careful with his load management.
The win lifts Coventry out of the relegation zone and up to 14th, while Newcastle suffer a heavy blow after getting back to winning ways against Hull.
