Barcelona secured a comfortable 3-0 victory. Ferran Torres opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick in the 11th minute, followed by Dani Olmo’s penalty in the 21st minute. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski completed the scoring in the 77th minute after coming on as a substitute.
With this victory, Barcelona now sits atop the La Liga standings with 63 points, followed by Real Madrid in second place with 60 points, while Atletico Madrid is third with 56 points.
In this context, according to information from the Spanish newspaper ‘‘El Nacional‘‘, the decision of goalkeeper Iñaki Peña has emerged, expressing his desire to leave the club this summer after feeling his playing opportunities had significantly diminished. Iñaki Peña made a decisive decision and communicated it directly to coach Hansi Flick: he wants to leave Barcelona this summer.
Peña, who played a key role during goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen’s injury, feels his time at the club is over. The player is looking for a new destination where he can become an undisputed starter.
Peña got his big break this season when Ter Stegen suffered a knee injury that kept him out for an extended period. During that time, the young goalkeeper performed well and proved to be a reliable option in goal for Barcelona. However, with the arrival of Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, Peña has reverted to a secondary role.
The signing of Szczesny, who is currently negotiating a new contract with Barcelona, was a setback for Iñaki Peña. Previously, Peña saw the possibility of competing with Ter Stegen for the starting goalkeeper spot, but that has now changed, with Szczesny becoming Flick’s preferred goalkeeper in the event of a rest or injury.
Iñaki Peña is aware of his need for regular playing time to continue his development. He doesn’t want to be a mere backup option, which is why he made it clear to Flick and the Barcelona management that he intends to leave the club this summer. Barcelona, for its part, understands the goalkeeper’s situation and has already begun searching for a new destination for him, focusing on finding a team that will allow him consistent playing time while simultaneously generating some financial revenue for the club.
With the decision made, all indications point to Iñaki Peña leaving Barcelona this summer. The question now is: will it be a permanent move or a loan with an option to buy? The club is expected to seek between €5 and €7 million for his transfer.
The only certainty is that Peña will not be at Barcelona next season. He wants to play regularly, but he knows he won’t get that opportunity at Camp Nou.
