Barcelona secured a comfortable 3-0 victory. Ferran Torres opened the scoring with a surprise strike in the 11th minute, followed by Dani Olmo’s penalty in the 21st minute. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski completed the scoring in the 77th minute after coming on as a substitute.
With this victory, Barcelona now sits atop the La Liga standings with 63 points, followed by Real Madrid in second place with 60 points, while Atlético Madrid is in third with 56 points.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper ‘‘El Nacional‘‘, it is clear that Barcelona’s future strategy includes retaining key players, with Frenkie de Jong being one of the most prominent of these. The Dutch midfielder has become an indispensable element in coach Hansi Flick’s plans, and the club does not want to risk losing him. De Jong’s current contract expires in 2026; however, Joan Laporta has given Deco the green light to negotiate a contract extension until 2029.
Since the German coach’s arrival, De Jong has regained his best form, transforming from a player whose presence was once questioned into a leader in Barcelona’s midfield. With his ability to create balance on the pitch, start plays from the back, and break lines with his commanding style, De Jong has become an integral part of the playing style that Flick is seeking to implement.
Barcelona is fully aware of the importance of keeping its best players, and De Jong is one of the most prominent of these. Given that his current contract expires in 2026, the club would be in a delicate position if it is not renewed before the summer of 2025. To avoid any surprises, Laporta has given De Jong the green light to negotiate a contract extension as soon as possible.
Barcelona is prioritizing De Jong’s contract renewal, but it is not the only issue the club is working on. The club is also seeking to extend the contracts of other key players, such as Lamine Yamal and Rafinha.
In the coming weeks, Deco will begin formal contact with De Jong’s entourage to agree on the terms of a contract extension. If all goes as planned, Frenkie de Jong will continue to wear the Barcelona shirt until 2029, cementing his position as one of the team’s key leaders under Hansi Flick.
