Barcelona is preparing for a tough La Liga match tomorrow against its Catalan neighbor, Girona, in the 29th round of the competition. Barcelona leads the league with 63 points, three points ahead of its traditional rival, Real Madrid.
According to information from the Spanish newspaper ‘‘El Nacional‘‘, Barcelona continues to explore options to bolster its attack for next season. Among the names circulating in recent weeks is Luis Díaz, the current Liverpool player. However, it appears that Hansi Flick is not convinced about signing him, as he has expressed his doubts to the board.
The German coach believes that age is one of the main reasons for his exclusion of the Colombian player. Luis Díaz is set to turn 29 in January 2026, which means Flick would prefer to sign a younger player who can contribute to the team in the medium and long term.
Since taking over as Barcelona’s coach, Flick has emphasized the importance of building a team with young players to ensure the sustainability of the sporting project. Therefore, his priorities are focused on signing players with potential for growth and improvement, which makes signing Luis Díaz a non-starter for his plan.
Despite Díaz’s extensive experience in major competitions with Liverpool and the Colombian national team, signing him would require a huge investment in a player believed to be at the peak of his athletic potential.
On the other hand, Flick welcomes the idea of signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. Unlike Luis Díaz, Williams is only 22 years old, giving him room to develop and grow under Flick.
The German coach believes that if Barcelona is going to invest heavily in a striker, it should be one with a long-term future. Furthermore, Williams’ speed, dribbling ability, and style of play, which aligns with Barcelona’s philosophy, make him an ideal choice.
Nico Williams’ close relationship with key players at Barcelona, such as Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde, who have played alongside him on the Spanish national team, could also facilitate his adaptation to the team and improve his performance.
In this context, all indications suggest that Barcelona is inclined to continue its search for young options, with Nico Williams considered the most likely candidate to join the team.
